My first handheld device for ebooks was a Dell Axim x51v.

E-Ink devices were a very new concept at the time.
This was a great device. I still have it too, for a just in case scenario. But the screen is too small and the battery life wasn't great, I did get an extended battery that helped that problem. But then it wasn't as comfortable to hold for a long length of time with the battery sticking out at the back of it.

I upgraded the operating system to WM 6, thanks to the clever people at XDA Developers. It works great. Was mainly using Mobipocket originally for ebook reading but got frustrated with the bugs and lack of it being updated so searched for another program to use and finally settled on Alreader. Alreader is the best ebook reading program I have used, it has a lot of customization that you can do to it but once that's all settled it works beautifully, much better than Mobipocket in it's current state.
The commercial version of Alreader is Allreader (double l). That's the WM version available in english and it isn't free. However the WinCE version in english is. And you can get the Russian WM version free, just have to guess at settings (trial and error).
I know the Iphone craze is around but it has never appealed to me, having the device I read on as a phone. I don't like phones anyway, but I do keep a nokia for emergencies. Hardly use it. But that has GPS so it's not totally useless.
Dell abandoned the Axim unfortunately, it was one of the best Windows Mobile devices for it's time, still is good. It's a shame, Dell could of expanded on this device....but, oh well.
For anyone interested in purchasing one I believe they are still sold cheaply on ebay. Great inexpensive device to see if you like ebook reading.

I just purchased an X51v on eBay specifically for the ebook purpose. It has the Word Mobile which reads .txt and .rtf files wonderfully. I also like the wi-fi capability. The only thing is I wish it had USB capabilities. Otherwise, I've had it less than a week, already reading books and feel it's a great little device!
Hi, thanks for posting. It is a great device, my only thing was I wanted a bigger screen! Otherwise it was just about perfect.
